Aaron Gillane supports Camino walk as fans pray for Limerick hurler's recovery - Ireland News Beep

LIMERICK’S star forward Aaron Gillane is leading the way on and off the pitch by calling for support for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) Ireland.

The charity’s ambassador unfortunately picked up a calf injury before the Limerick – Cork clash but it is hoped he will be back for the latter stages of the Munster championship.

Aaron has supported CRY through his association with Liam Herlihy (formerly of Cavanaghs of Charleville). Monagea for CRY – an annual fundraising cycle and walk – honoured the memories of Niamh Herlihy, aged 20, and Darra O’Donovan, 15, who both passed away suddenly in 2011.

The 10th and final year of Monagea for CRY took place in 2024. This year Liam and wife Marie will continue their fundraising for CRY by taking part in the 2026 Camino. The fundraising trek begins on September 6 and will take six days to complete.

Aaron said he was happy to team up with CRY Ireland to help spread awareness, raise funds and “encourage people to get involved in their mission to save young lives from sudden cardiac death”.

It is estimated that up to 80 people under the age of 35 die in Ireland each year to sudden cardiac death, with many others affected by the diagnosis of an inherited cardiac condition. All services provided by CRY Ireland are free, so donations are essential to its continued good work.

Lucia Ebbs, CEO of CRY Ireland, said the Camino fundraiser plays a vital role in supporting CRY Ireland’s mission. Funds raised help the organisation continue its commitment to families affected by sudden cardiac death, providing essential services such as their freephone helpline and the family support programme.
