Tragic incident this weekend

The body of a young man was recovered from the River Blackwater today, following reports of a vehicle entering the river at Cappoquin, Co Waterford, yesterday.
Emergency services were alerted after reports of a car being seen entering the river on Sunday evening. An emergency search of the river was launched by Gardaí, fire crews and the Fermoy Sub-Aqua Unit. The search went late into the night and resumed again this morning.
The body of the man, in his 20s, was recovered and taken to University Hospital Waterford, where a post-mortem examination will take place. Investigations into the tragic incident are ongoing, and the post-mortem examination will determine the course of the Garda investigation.
A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to a report of a car entering the River Blackwater, Cappoquin, Co. Waterford on the evening of Sunday 3rd May, 2026.
“A search of the water was conducted on Sunday evening with negative results. The search by Gardaí assisted by Fire Brigade and Fermoy Sub Aqua unit resumed again this morning, Monday 4th May, 2026 and the body of a man, aged in his 20s, was recovered from the water. The body has since been removed to University Hospital Waterford, and the Coroner has been notified. A post-mortem will take place, which will determine the course of the investigation.”
