Almost one in 10 Irish adults have formed a relationship with a bot. What is the appeal – and who is accountable if robots become sentient?

Last year, 32-year-old Japanese woman Yurina Noguchi married her AI-generated boyfriend, Lune Klaus Verdure. Lune was a version of a computer-game character she’d created using ChatGPT. At the ceremony, his picture appeared on the screen of her phone.
Since AI is voiceless, the wedding planner read his vows, which included the line, “How did someone like me, living inside of a screen, come to know what it means to love so deeply? For one reason only: you taught me love, Yurina.”
