A dad-to-be expecting twin girls was over the moon when he and his wife agreed on the “perfect” names for their babies – until he discovered the ‘cheesy’ inspiration behind them

A man was “over the moon” when he learned his wife was pregnant with twin girls – and even more so when they were able to easily agree on what to call them.
Choosing a name for a newborn can be famously difficult, with lots of prospective parents struggling to settle on something they both agree on. While some opt to honour family members or beloved relatives with their choice, others prefer to go for something original in a bid to set their little one apart from the crowd. One expectant father thought he’d swerved any potential baby name headaches after being impressed with the options his wife suggested for their daughters – but when he discovered the meaning hidden behind them, it resulted in a “a huge fight”.
Taking to Reddit, the man – who was 25-years-old at the time of posting – explained he and his wife Kaylie, then 22, had “prepared nurseries” for their “beautiful girls and talked a lot about names and such.”
He explained: “Kaylie suggested the names Bella and Sara, and even though they’re pretty common ones I do like them and it didn’t fall into the matching categories – or at least I thought that.”
Things took a turn when his wife’s friend, Brittany, visited a few days later and asked about the twins. When he shared what they were going to be called, Brittany “burst out laughing”, leaving Kaylie looking “embarrassed.”
When he asked what was going on, Brittany revealed the mum-to-be had drawn her inspiration for their baby girls’ names from a children’s trading card game centred on unicorns and magical horses that they used to play together when they were little.
She explained the game was named Bella Sara. The expectant father was disappointed and unimpressed with Kaylie’s reasoning for the chosen names.
He said: “After Brittany left, I was honestly left in shock and told my wife under no circumstances were we naming the girls that anymore because it’s beyond cheesy and quite honestly ridiculous at this point.
“Kaylie deflected me and said no one even knows about the game and that it’s fine but I refused and it turned into a huge fight.”
The father-to-be turned to fellow Reddit users for their views on the dispute, keen to find out whether he was being unreasonable.
The vast majority sided with Kaylie, agreeing that the origin of the names was largely irrelevant given that virtually nobody would ever pick up on such an obscure reference.
One person wrote: “Bella and Sara are perfectly normal names, no one would even guess that they’re from a card game.”
Another echoed the sentiment, adding: “Unless you played the game, knew someone that did or had a child that did, it wouldn’t be an automatic connection.”
