Gardai and Dublin Fire Brigade attended the scene at the Royal Canal
A man has died after a body was recovered from the Royal Canal in the city centre on Sunday afternoon.
Emergency services raced to the scene at Mayor Street Bridge shortly before 1:30pm. Gardai and members of Dublin Fire Brigade worked to recover the man’s body from the water but he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
The deceased man was taken to the City Morgue where a post-mortem will be carried out. Gardai said the results of the post-mortem will determine the course of the investigation. It’s understood foul play is not suspected at this time.
A Garda spokesman told Dublin Live: “Gardaí and emergency services were alerted shortly before 1:30pm following the discovery of the body of an adult male in the Royal Canal at Mayor Street Bridge, Dublin, on 17th May 2026.
“He was removed from the water and pronounced deceased at the scene. The Coroner has been notified and the deceased has been taken to the City Morgue, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted. The outcome of the post-mortem will determine the course of the Garda investigation.”
