A postmortem into the death of a man placed in a suspected headlock has not yet yielded answers regarding the cause of death.
Gardai investigating the death of David O’Mahony, 38, in Artane, north Dublin, are now understood to be awaiting further information after a postmortem examination of his remains has so far proven inconclusive.
Mr O’Mahony, who friends described as an “always happy” and dedicated Shelbourne FC fan, was declared dead after an alleged row at a house in Artane last Saturday. A man in his 60s, who was known to the deceased, was initially arrested amid claims that he intervened in a row between Mr O’Mahony and another person – and placed him in a headlock.
Now The Irish Mirror has learned that gardai and emergency services were first made aware of the incident when Mr O’Mahony’s mother raised the alarm and dialled 999. It is understood they responded to claims of a row at the house – and on arrival found Mr O’Mahony in an unresponsive state.
The man in his 60s was subsequently released without charge – and now a postmortem examination has stalled progress in the complex case. Sources say the investigation into this tragic incident is not straightforward, and will take time.
This week Mr O’Mahony’s favourite football club Shelbourne FC posted a tribute to him stating:
“It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of supporter, David O’Mahoney, over the weekend. All at Shelbourne FC offer our condolences to David’s family & friends at this sad time. Funeral details will be announced in due course. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”
It comes as a friend of Mr O’Mahony earlier this week told of his shock over his death and paid tribute to him telling The Irish Mirror: “He was a great friend to me. One of my best friends. Would always cheer you up. Positive. Always happy. Walking into Tolka Park each week he would be stopped walking around saying hello to loads of people who he’s met on buses to Shels away games and all. The void will never be filled in my life that’s for sure.”
The friend told how Mr O’Mahony was a lifelong Shelbourne FC fan – and had been enjoying a match with pals on Friday – just hours before his tragic death.

“Dave was a Shelbourne season ticket holder. He was at the match Friday night in Inchicore watching Shels win before a few hours later not being with us anymore,” the friend said.
“He travelled around Europe last year on the European Shels run and he was in Derry when they won the league with Damien Duff in charge two years ago. On that night in Derry he managed to get in the Shels dressing room with the team.
“We were so jealous. He has great pics but all on his phone unfortunately of being with the team. He was so happy,” he added.
In their last update Gardai confirmed the arrested man has been released without charge. They said a file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
