Funeral arrangements for Alex Coughlan will be announced in the coming days following his death after he was assaulted and robbed, with his heartbroken family saying he was “horrifically taken” from them.
Alex (37), from Blanchardstown in Dublin 15, died on Wednesday, three days after he suffered serious injuries in an attack near his home on Mill Road in Blanchardstown.
He was assaulted at approximately 4.15pm on Sunday, May 17.
He suffered serious injuries in the attack near his home and was treated at Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown where he tragically passed away on Wednesday, May 20.
Two teenage boys were arrested as part of the investigation and appeared in court on Wednesday. They were charged in relation to the assault and robbery.
The teenagers were remanded in custody to appear in court again next week.
In his death notice on RIP.ie, Alex’s heartbroken family say funeral arrangements will be announced later as tributes continue to flow for the 37-year-old.
“Horrifically taken from his friends and family,” the death notice reads.

“Alex will be forever missed and loved by his heartbroken parents John and Brigid, stepmother Sonia, brothers Philip and Jack, sister Zara, sister-in-law Grace, aunts, uncles, niece Kailyn, nephews George, Louis and Luan, his adored “son” who has been robbed of his father figure Filimon, close cousins, extended family and wide circle of fantastic friends and work colleagues at Bupa.
“May his kind and gentle soul rest in peace.”
Paying tribute, a work colleague wrote: “My deepest condolences to Alex’s family and friends. I had the privilege of working closely with him at Bupa and will always hold fond memories of him, both professionally and through the many social events we shared. I will deeply miss the chats Alex and I had over the years. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Rest in peace Alex.”
Another mourner wrote: “There are not enough words to express the sadness I feel for you all. My heartfelt condolences go out to Alexander’s son, family and friends. Rest in peace,” while another wrote: “So sorry to hear the horrific news. May Alex rest in eternal peace with God. May God give you the strength to cope. We will pray for your peace and soul.”
Another wrote: “To Alex’s family and friends. I can’t begin to imagine the range of emotions you must be feeling at this time. Like many others across Ireland, you will be in my thoughts over the next few days and weeks as you navigate the tragic loss of Alex. I hope memories of Alex bring you strength and comfort. May Alex rest in eternal peace.”
Earlier, Alex’s grieving family revealed that his organs were donated ‘to help others in need’, describing it as a final act that reflected his caring and selfless nature.
Paying tribute on a GoFundMe page launched to help with the funeral costs, Aoife Lawless, a representative of the family, said Alex had “touched so many lives” and remembered him as a deeply caring person.
“Alex was truly loved by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him,” Aoife wrote on behalf of the Coughlan family.
“His kindness, warmth and presence touched so many lives, and he will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.

“During this incredibly difficult time, Alex’s family would like to sincerely thank all the staff involved in his care at Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown for their compassion, support, and kindness.
“They would also like to thank all family and friends who have been there for them with messages, visits, prayers and support over the past days.
“As the family prepares for the difficult weeks ahead and the upcoming funeral and related expenses, any donation, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated and will help ease some of the financial burden during this heartbreaking time.
“Most importantly, the family asks that Alex be remembered for the wonderful person he was and the love and laughter he brought to so many.”
