Beachgoers watched in horror on Tuesday afternoon as an allegedly drunk man brandished a knife at a busy seaside spot.
Several Garda units, including a Public Order van, responded to the emergency at Loughbeg Beach in Ringaskiddy at around 4:30pm yesterday. According to witnesses, a man in his 30s, accompanied by a woman, became aggressive after drinking alcohol and produced a knife.
The shocking scene prompted alarm among hundreds of members of the public, who had gathered on the beach to enjoy the mini-heatwave, reports the Neil Prendeville Show on Cork’s Red FM. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed: “Gardaí responded to reports of an alleged public order incident at Loughbeg Beach, Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork on Tuesday 26th May 2026 at approximately 4.30pm.
There were no injuries reported. A man (30s) who was arrested at the scene has since been charged. He is due to appear before Cork District Court at a later date..”
Loughbeg Beach is a popular spot with families, being just a 30-minute drive from Cork city centre. Public safety on Ireland’s beaches has been a topic of discussion in recent days, with councillors across the country and here in Cork calling for an extension to the lifeguard service season.
Garda Public Order vans are usually deployed during riots or in advance of large scale planned events like protests or major sports matches.
