Gardai are probing a personal grudge motive in relation to a brutal park assault that has left a man fighting for his life.
The man, who is aged in his 50s, is in a critical condition in Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital after he was discovered with serious injuries in Belcamp Park, Coolock last Wednesday evening.
It is understood the victim was initially conscious at the scene and his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening – but his condition has significantly deteriorated since then.
Sources say gardai are now investigating whether the man was beaten by a man known to him amid a personal dispute that has been going on for some time. Sources say it is feared that someone who had a personal grudge against the victim attacked him in the park after tensions had risen in recent weeks.
Initially, it was thought the victim might be discharged from the hospital, but his condition worsened, leading to a coma. He is now being examined for serious head injuries. It is understood that there are grave concerns for his wellbeing – with a source saying the next 48 hours were critical.
Gardai do not believe the incident has any connection to feuding in the area or gangland crime – and instead the suspected motive here is personal. They are understood to now be canvassing for footage and to speak to anyone who might have been in the Belcamp Park area between 5:30pm and 6pm last Wednesday.
In a witness appeal issued this week gardai said they are investigating “following report of an alleged serious assault of a male, in Coolock, Dublin 17 on the evening of Wednesday 20th May 2026.
“The incident is believed to have occurred in Belcamp Park, near the Clonshaugh Park entrance closest to Clonshaugh Lawn,” they added.
“Shortly after 6:00pm, Gardaí and emergency services responded to report of a man found unresponsive at Clonshaugh Park, Coolock, Dublin 17.
“The man (aged in his 50’s) was conveyed to Beaumont Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. His condition remains critical. The scene was preserved for technical examination. Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to come forward.
Anyone who was in the vicinity of the Clonshaugh Park entrance to Belcamp Park, or Clonshaugh Drive, Coolock, Dublin 17, during the hours of 5:30pm and 6:30pm on Wednesday 20th May 2026 and who may have camera footage-including dash-cam footage-is asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí.
