Aldi has started opening new bakeries at some supermarkets

Supermarket staff are “counting down the days” until they can open the doors of the newly refurbished Aldi store in Fermoy. The retailer has given the Dublin Road shop a multi-million euro makeover.

The supermarket has been closed for six weeks, with Aldi confirming it is on track to reopen the shop next week. Aldi Fermoy will reopen on Thursday morning, June 4, at 8am.

Store Manager Eoin Desmond, who has worked with the German retail giant for over a decade, said: “We’re counting down the days until we can welcome the people of Fermoy back through our doors.”

Eoin, who lives with his family in Kilworth, added: “Having worked with ALDI since 2014, I’ve seen first-hand how much we’ve grown, and I’m especially proud to be reopening in a town where my family and I have made our home.”

Aldi has invested €4.2m into the refurbishment of the store, which has been one of the most popular supermarkets in Fermoy for 14 years. When it first opened in 2012, it was Aldi’s 14th Cork location. The first Aldi in Cork opened in Ballincollig back in 1999.

Aldi has remodelled a number of its Irish shops using its award-winning ‘Project Fresh’ store design, which it has implemented at a number of its locations in recent years. Other Aldi locations which have had Project Fresh revamps include Skibbereen, Douglas and the Elysian.

At Fermoy, the new layout includes a bakery, a bigger emphasis on fresh fruit and veg, and the retail floor space has been expanded by more than 20% – from 965 sqm to 1,171 sqm. Management hopes a ‘larger shopping space’ will improve customer experience. It will also create five new permanent jobs.

Store Manager Eoin encouraged shoppers to keep an eye out for local products on the shelves. He said: “Firstly, look out for local suppliers. As a Corkman, I’m always especially pleased to see our local products on the shelves… including Velo Coffee, which I love, and Silver Pail Ice Cream, whose factory is located directly across the road from our Fermoy store. It’s something I’m very proud of.”

“For those interested, our quietest (and quickest) time to shop is usually from 8pm to 10pm, ” he added, “Shopping later in the day is also a great time to spot some of the marked down fresh fruit, veg and meat products. We also run autism-friendly hours every Tuesday from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, providing a quieter, more sensory-friendly environment.”
