Netflix is officially rewriting its rules with the release of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. Following delays, fans of C. S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia book series now know that Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will be arriving in early 2027. The Magician’s Nephew will be the first installment in Netflix’s adaptation of Lewis’ novels, and unlike Disney’s franchise from the ’00s, it won’t be following The Chronicles of Narnia’s book order. Instead, it will follow the story chronologically, beginning with Digory Kirke’s childhood.

Daniel Craig, who will portray Digory’s uncle, Andrew Ketterley, is one of the most exciting figures in the cast of The Magician’s Nephew so far. With such a popular name attached to the project, Netflix won’t have any trouble getting audiences engaged with the upcoming adaptation, even those who might not be familiar with C. S. Lewis’ books or the Disney films. However, Netflix has now made a bold move regarding the release of The Magician’s Nephew, with the streaming service completely changing its own rules to reflect a new era of movie watching.

‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’ Will Have a Major Theatrical Release

The Chronicles of Narnia getting another chance as a movie series is something both readers of the books and viewers of Disney’s literary adaptations from the ’00s have been desperate for. 2005’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe made quite an impact on young people, but Disney’s Narnia franchise somewhat veered off with 2008’s Prince Caspian and 2010’s The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the latter being the final installment.

That’s why audiences are so excited yet cautiously curious about Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Netflix title Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. However, this recent development should signify to viewers that Netflix is taking the treatment of the Narnia franchise seriously. Netflix has recently confirmed that The Magician’s Nephew will get a theatrical release. The fantastic adventure will arrive in cinemas globally on Feb. 12, 2027, in both IMAX and standard viewing, and sneak previews in IMAX only will start from Feb. 10, too. The Magician’s Nephew won’t arrive on Netflix until Apr. 2, though, giving the movie an astounding seven-week run in theaters before being available to stream.

The Magician’s Nephew theatrical run is a first for Netflix. While there have been other Netflix movies in the past that have received cinematic treatment, no other title has been given such a substantial run. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, for example, famously ran in theaters for a week before its release on Netflix in 2022, and The Irishman also got a few weeks in cinemas despite its incredibly long runtime. The Magician’s Nephew’s theatrical run, though, will more closely reflect a typical timeline of movies appearing in cinemas.

Interestingly, this will also be the second time a Netflix production involving Daniel Craig will receive a theatrical run. Perhaps there’s something about the former James Bond actor that makes Netflix feel optimistic. While it’s unlikely Craig’s involvement is the main reason for this, the fact that he and the rest of the star-studded cast, including the likes of Meryl Streep and Carey Mulligan, are so prominent will definitely draw cinema-goers in.

Of course, Netflix’s Warner Bros. buyout has resulted in plenty of news about theatrical runs, and the service is hoping to permanently move its business model, with titles receiving a 45-day run in cinemas before arriving on streaming. Whether that will happen or not is yet to be revealed, but hopefully, the theatrical success of The Magician’s Nephew will indicate whether Netflix’s plan is realistically achievable going forward.
