Galway GAA star Sean Fitzgerald made his first appearance on dating show Love Island last night, and it’s fair to say that the 25-year-old is already making waves.
The defender departed that Galway Championship panel in order to pursue the opportunity and chase stardom.
Fitzgerald has certainly made an impression in his first few hours in the villa, impressing his fellow islanders with his bleached blond buzzcut look, a haircut which left one islander asking whether or not he was a natural blond.
One of the biggest talking points of the school teacher’s debut on the show as his insistence on going my his nickname ‘Fitzy’ rather than Sean.
Indeed, the term ‘Fitzy’ is even trending on social media platform X this morning, with many users wondering why he isn’t going by his actual name.
“Sean how do you get a name like Fitzy?” said one user, seemingly unaware that his surname is Fitzgerald.
“Why’s he going by Fitzy and not Sean in there?” wrote another user, whose post has been viewed a staggering 130,000 times.
One user came to his defence, writing “People acting like Fitzy is a name he made up for Love Island. It’s completely normal in Ireland for a nickname to stick and his whole TikTok and sport brand is literally built around Fitzy. Some of you will nitpick absolutely anything lol”
Another account defender the GAA star as well, posting numerous posts very similar to the following: “That is his nickname which he is known by in the company of his friends and fellow GAA players at home in Ireland. His full name is Seán Fitzgerald but he is known as Fitzy.”
With the show just starting, the Great British public will have all summer to get to terms with the nickname, and perhaps GAA in general.
