A tight-knit community in West Cork are banding together to support a young family after the death of a dad-of-three. Gideon Cullum passed away suddenly on May 29.
The 36-year-old Clonakilty dad has been remembered as a “larger than life character, full of energy and enthusiasm and positivity and mischievous fun.” Family friends have set up a fundraiser to help his heartbroken family, including his three sons, just 13, 9 and 2 years old.
A cremation service for the young dad was held at the Island Crematorium in Ringaskiddy yesterday. Donations have poured in from across the community, with close to €10k raised in a matter of hours to support Gideon’s family after such a devastating shock. In a GoFundMe set up to help the family with funeral costs, Katharine Kohler said Gideon has been lost “half a lifetime too soon.”
“We lost the father of my children suddenly and unexpectedly. Hearts are broken and two little families are left with no dad for the rest of their lives,” she wrote, and said there were “no words for how much he will be missed.”
She described the shockwaves through the Clonakilty and Bandon communities as “palpable.” “In the midst of grief lies the costs of something no one is ready to pay for,” she said, “I would love to ease the pain of his parents in one way by helping to pay for the expenses of the funeral for their son.”
