Our latest Take Ten guest is Lewis Pullman.
In this episode, we get into Pullman’s latest drumming doings with his band Atta Boy, working with his dad, Bill Pullman, in the upcoming Spaceballs: The New One, and what we can expect from his next Marvel go-round as Bob/ Sentry in Avengers: Doomsday.
Currently starring with Sally Field in the Netflix film Remarkably Bright Creatures, Pullman plays Cameron Cassmore, a down-at-heel musician who finds himself cleaning an aquarium with a very special occupant: Marcellus the octopus.
To prepare for the role, Pullman says he referenced knowledge gleaned from the documentary My Octopus Teacher. He also learned that the plural of Octopus is not “octopi” but “octopuses.”

Working with Field felt “immediate, natural and fun,” he says. “We jumped right into the scene where Marcellus, the octopus, is on the loose in the aquarium, and we can’t find him, and we were like in a game of like imaginary chicken. She was like, ‘Oh my god, it’s going out the door!’ And then I was like, ‘It is going out the door, and down the hallway,’ and the camera operator followed us out there with her iPhone, it was so fun.”
For Spaceballs, he says, it was a long-awaited chance to work with his dad. “We had always wanted to work together, but Spaceballs is such a kind of huge, iconic totem in my mind,” he says. “I never could wrap my mind around the concept of me piercing through the frame of that world and entering the screen in that way, and so I was so glad that I had Pop there, because it was scary. I hope it’s one of many. I hope we get to do a lot more together, because it was kind of like felt like what it’s all about in a lot of ways. I hope everyone gets the chance to work with their family. It’s beautiful.”

Pullman’s imminent return to the Marvel universe in Avengers: Doomsday has him a little tight-lipped regarding plot details. He’ll be resuming the role of Bob/Sentry, last seen in Thunderbolts*, and says of the next installment, “I’m excited to see it myself. So, I would be lying if I would just tell you what to expect, because I don’t know, I haven’t seen the darn thing. But I know for a fact that there are a lot of beloved characters who resume their journeys in very unexpected ways, that it’s going to really, I think, keep people wanting to probably see it more than one time.”
