Anthony Head had a long and varied career which saw him play major roles on stage and screen, as well as perform as a singer.
In the 1980s he became known for his role in the Nescafe Gold Blend TV adverts.
He played one half of the Gold Blend couple, alongside Sharon Maughan, who began a slow-burning romance over a cup of coffee.
During the 1990s he played Dr Frank N Furter in The Rocky Horror Show in London’s West End, a role he later returned to in other productions.
In the late 1990s he became known to audiences further afield for his recurring role in hit US teen drama Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
He played librarian Rupert Giles, who became the eponymous character’s mentor and father figure.
He played Giles from 1997 to 2003, appearing in 121 episodes.
In the 2000s he had guest roles in TV dramas such as Silent Witness, Spooks and Monarch Of The Glen.
He also turned to comedy, playing the prime minister in Little Britain.
He co-starred in the BBC TV series Manchild, which focused on four friends approaching their 50s.
Head was more recently seen on screens in popular Netflix series Ted Lasso as former AFC Richmond owner Rupert Mannion and playing the role of Bill in hit BBC sitcom Motherland.
He won an Online Film & Television Association (Ofta) award for best guest actor in a comedy series for his role in Ted Lasso in 2021.
Born on February 20 1954 in Camden Town, north London, he grew up in Hampton, near Richmond upon Thames.
He was the youngest son of Seafield Head, a documentary filmmaker, and Helen Shingler, an actress.
His older brother is musician and actor Murray Head, best known for his role in the Oscar-nominated 1971 film Sunday Bloody Sunday, and for singing the 1984 single One Night In Bangkok from the musical Chess.
Although they never married, Head was in a long-term relationship with animal welfare campaigner Sarah Fisher, and the couple had two daughters together who also became actors.
Emily Head starred in The Inbetweeners and Emmerdale, while Daisy Head has had roles in TV series Harlots and Shadow And Bone.
Fisher, an ambassador for Battersea Dogs And Cats Home and patron of Holly Hedge Animal Sanctuary, died in January.
She had run Tilley Farm, a 90-acre property near Bath in Somerset, where she looked after rescued horses, ponies and donkeys.
Head’s singing career saw him perform in a band named Two Way in the early 1980s, while he also provided backing vocals for another act, Red Box.
