An event to mark 60 years of Cuan Mhuire, which provides residential addiction treatment and rehabilitation, will take place today.
Founded in 1966 by Sr Consilio Fitzgerald, Cuan Mhuire was first established in in Athy, Co Kildare.
It now has other facilities in Galway, Limerick, Cork and Newry, providing support for people struggling with alcohol, drug, and gambling addictions.
An event will take place in Athy in Co Kildare today, to mark the significant milestone.
Speaking to RTÉ News earlier this year, manager of Cuan Mhuire’s Athy Centre Nicola Kelly said the number of people seeking help for addiction has increased in recent years and cocaine is the biggest issue.
Ms Kelly, who has been working at the centre for more than two decades, said more people are presenting for help and that this reflects a broader trend across Irish society.
She said people presenting for treatment come from all walks of life, all professions and all locations.
