Queen Camilla was made Colonel of the Grenadier Guards in December 2022, when the details of that year’s Trooping the Colour were announced. The role was previously held by Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. At the same time, the Princess of Wales’s appointment as Colonel of the Irish Guards and the Prince of Wales’s appointment as Colonel of the Welsh Guards were announced.
Indeed, the Princess of Wales also paid tribute to her military role at Trooping the Colour 2026. In addition to her outfit, the Princess of Wales made a nod to one of her most important royal roles, wearing the Regimental brooch of the Irish Guards, where she serves as what Clare Balding described as a ‘hugely popular’ Colonel. A rayed St. Patrick’s Star, the brooch bears the gilt motto of the Order of St Patrick – ‘Quis Separabit MDCCLXXXIII’, which translates into ‘Who shall separate us?’.

The Roman numerals refer to 2023, the year that the Princess of Wales formally took up her role as Colonel of the Irish Guards after King Charles promoted her to the position in 2022. The brooch also bears an enamel green shamrock, three crowns, and a red enamel saltire.
