A relative unknown to those outside the world of the GAA – and to many of those within the Fianna Fáil party until Taoiseach Micheál Martin produced him as a candidate – Jim Gavin has less than a month to acquaint himself with voters.

The only candidate without an electoral record, his presidential campaign will be leaning on his roots in the GAA, his work with the Defence Forces and his work in north-east inner-city Dublin.
