There has been much speculation about which secondary school Prince George would attend starting in September. And today, Kensington Palace announced the decision—that he will follow in his father’s footsteps and attend the all-boys boarding school Eton College.
“Kensington Palace can confirm that Prince George will attend Eton College from September,” a spokesperson said. The 12-year-old prince is currently in the final year of Lambrook School, a co-educational prep school in Berkshire which Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8, also attend. The decision means of course that Princess Charlotte, who is two school years behind her brother, cannot attend the same secondary school.
The choice of Eton comes after William and Kate were said to have explored a number of different options for George. His mother’s alma mater Marlborough College was believed to have been a contender. They were also said to have looked at Oundle School in Northamptonshire. Both of these could be contenders for Princess Charlotte.
Prince William became the first future King to go to Eton when he enrolled there in 1995. His parents made the choice after his father was sent to Gordonstoun in Scotland, which he is said to have found difficult at times. Prince Harry also enrolled at Eton in 1998. The school has educated 20 British Prime Ministers and fees now cost more than £60,000 per year.
In 2000 in an interview for his 18th birthday, William praised Eton. “Yes, very much,” he said when asked if he had enjoyed it. “I’ll miss my friends and Dr Gailey (Housemaster) who has been a tremendous support to me. And I’ve really enjoyed being able to go about Eton as just another student.”
Eton is a boarding-only school. However, George will not have far to travel home for the weekends as it is just a few miles from the Wales’s Windsor home Forest Lodge.
