As you’d expect, with streaming giant Netflix you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing something for your next movie night.

If you’re in the mood for a good old-fashioned stand-alone horror movie featuring one of cinema’s classic monsters, look no further than The Invisible Man. Elisabeth Moss plays a woman terrorised by a seemingly invisible entity shortly after her abusive ex-boyfriend dies. She will receive a large sum of money from his will if she can prove she is mentally stable – but that proves a little doubtful when she tells authorities that something invisible is trying to murder her..

A new addition to the service is 2009 romcom It’s Complicated. With Steve Martin trying to woo single mum Meryl Streep, who’s having an affair with her married ex-husband Alec Baldwin, “complicated” is putting this delectable farce pretty mildly.

You could try tense documentary film The Deepest Breath, which follows the awe-inspiring journey that Italian free-diving champion Alessia Zecchini undergoes in order to break the world free-diving record. She enlists the help of Stephen Keenan, an Irish record-setting free-diver and one of the best safety specialists in the field. The film not only shows the journey they embark on together, but also how they got into the sport and how they met.

These days writer/director Christopher Nolan is lauded for mind-bending sci-fi epics, but his journey into other dimensions really began with the earthbound Batman Begins, which de-camped the caped crusader. 2008’s The Dark Knight takes that seriousness to the next level, recasting the Joker as a psychopathic terrorist, played with jerky, sadistic unpredictability by the late Heath Ledger.

The fourth instalment in the Despicable Me franchise recently landed on the platform. The animated film sees Steve Carell take on the role of Gru once more, as he works with his family to take on an evil criminal known as Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) when he escapes from jail. It’s guaranteed to delight the whole family.

There’s also Remarkably Bright Creatures, based on the 2022 novel by Shelby Van Pelt. Starring Sally Field and Lewis Pullman, the film follows a lonely widow whose bond with a clever octopus and a drifting young man uncovers a life-changing family mystery.
