Colin Farrell returns as private detective John Sugar for the second season of the Apple TV series Sugar.
***Spoiler Alert***
The Los Angeles-set noir series sees the Irish actor reprise his role as the sharply dressed investigator, following a major reveal in season one that Sugar is an extraterrestrial living on Earth.
“He’s the only one of his species that’s left on the planet, so he’s feeling the burden and the weight and the sorrow of that as well,” Farrell told Reuters.
“That leads into a little bit of honesty. It also leads him down some dark avenues and some euphoric avenues with regard to violence and human desire,” he added.
The new season follows Sugar as he searches for Ji Moon, played by Raymond Lee, the brother of boxer Danny Moon, played by Jin Ha.
The case draws him deeper into Los Angeles’ criminal underworld, while also allowing the series to explore more of the city.
“We do get to touch on and explore and show the kind of culturally kaleidoscopic aspect of this city,” Farrell said.
“And it’s one of the things that I love about it, having lived here now for nearly 25 years.”
Among the new additions to the cast is Outlander actor Laura Donnelly, who plays Charlotte.
Donnelly said she looked to classic screen figures while shaping the character.
“I had lots of those actresses in the back of my mind, you know, kind of Lauren Bacall, Charlotte Rampling, Jessica Rabbit,” she said.
“Just sitting in the back of my mind, kind of how they move, how they play, how they play with their femininity.”
Farrell said the second season had improved on the first, when he was a “nervous wreck” because not all of the scripts were ready before filming began.
“We hadn’t got all the scripts, to be honest, in place when we started shooting. So, it was a bit of a building-the-plane mid-flight scenario,” he said.
The actor said improvisation remained part of the process.
“It’s become a part of this process that I’m involved in, in the creation of what Sugar is going through, and it’s just an utter joy to play in that sandbox,” he said.
Sugar season two premieres globally on Apple TV on Friday.
