Update at 4:45 p.m.

SHELBYVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — The police standoff near Shelbyville ended with a 31-year-old man being taken into custody for aggravated domestic battery.

Sheriff Brian McReynolds told WCIA that the standoff ended at approximately 3:30 p.m. 31-year-old Travis Hennings was taken into custody and is being evaluated at a hospital; he may remain there if hospital staff decide to place him on a psych hold.

McReynolds said the situation started around 8:45 a.m. when Hennings’ mother called 911.

“[Hennings] had pointed a firearm at a member of the household and was in a mental health crisis,” McReynolds said. “[Hennings’ mother] had left the residence, however there was the suspect there, plus another individual on scene.”

The other individual turned out to be Hennings’ father, and when he was able to get out of the house, he had been battered and was bleeding from the head.

“We got him to the hospital and turned to communicate with Travis to get him to turn himself in,” McReynolds said.

The standoff continued into the afternoon. Hennings was talked down and surrendered to law enforcement around 3:30 p.m., McReynolds said.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Illinois State Police’s tactical teams and crisis negotiators.

County Road 1800 East, which was closed to traffic as the standoff continued, has since reopened.
