Two spectators have been injured in a incident which happened during a stage of the Donegal International Rally this afternoon.

Race organisers say the accident happened during Stage 12 in the Gartan area.

It is understood that both individuals were taken to Letterkenny University Hospital for treatment.

The remaining two stages of the event were cancelled and a decision will be taken on Sunday’s stages later this evening.

Gardaí confirmed they are assisting medial personnel and event organisers after the incident.

Earlier, it emerged that gardaí had made 34 arrests as thousands of people descended on Co Donegal for the annual rally.

A hi-visibility garda operation has been under way in the county since yesterday.

The arrests were made between 7pm last night and 7am this morning.

A total of 24 people were arrested for public order offences with six people arrested on suspicion of drink or drug driving.

Two others were arrested for criminal damage and another under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Gardaí say their operation will last until Monday with many officers based around Letterkenny, the focal point for the three-day rally event.
