Ireland is set for some exceptionally warm weather over the week, and with summer holidays not yet here, many parents are wondering at what point classrooms could be shut?

While school closures for extreme heat don’t generally happen in Ireland, it is a question on many parents’ minds after Met Éireann issued both a weather warning and a weather advisory.

The Status Yellow – High Temperature warning issued for Ireland came into effect at midday on Tuesday and will remain in place until 9am on Friday. Met Éireann forecasters warned maximum temperatures in excess of 27°C combined with night-time minima in excess of 15°C were expected, but temperatures could reach 30°C on Thursday.

A weather advisory for the entire country was also put in place and is valid from midday on Monday, until 9am on Friday.

The national forecaster also warned of potential impacts including water safety issues due to increased use of lakes and beaches, uncomfortable sleeping conditions, and heat stress.

While there is no official maximum temperature threshold set that would result in school closures across Ireland, should temperatures hit above 30°C over a period of consecutive days and should a Met Éireann Red warning be issued, schools would be required to be shut.

But in the event temperatures do not exceed 30°C and no weather warning is in place, all schools across the country have the discretion to close when they see fit.

Keeping children safe in hot weather:

Your child could get heat exhaustion if they:

Become too hotAre not drinking enough fluids

Children do not sweat as much as adults. So they find it harder to stay cool. When its hot, you should make sure that babies and children drink enough fluids.

Heat exhaustion can turn into heatstroke if the body cannot cool down within 30 minutes. Heatstroke is a life-threatening medical emergency.
