We love a charming romantic comedy around these parts. We love a meet-cute, the awkward first steps, the sparks flying. When it works, it really works. And that looks like what we’re going to get from Prime Video‘s latest big swing in the book-inspired romantic genre. The streamer’s most anticipated rom-com dropped its trailer today, and our hypothesis for this one is success.
We’ve just seen the charming trailer for The Love Hypothesis, which follows Olive, a Ph.D. candidate who is focused on her future in academia until her best friend falls for the same guy she likes. Uh-oh. In a panic, Olive kisses the intimidating professor Adam Carlsen to prove she’s moved on, except, wouldn’t you know it, feelings start getting caught.
The official synopsis reads: “The Love Hypothesis follows Olive, a brilliant Ph.D. candidate focused on her future in academia. But when she realizes her best friend Ahn has fallen for her crush Jeremy, Olive impulsively kisses intimidating professor Adam Carlsen to prove she’s moved on. What begins as a desperate act of friendship spirals into a fake relationship with rules, boundaries, and a mutually beneficial agreement. When their arrangement begins to blur the lines between performance and reality, Olive is forced to test her most daunting hypothesis yet: that love might actually be worth the risk.”
The cast includes Lili Reinhart (Riverdale) as Olive, Tom Bateman (Murder on the Orient Express) as Adam Carlsen, Rachel Marsh (The Last of Us) as Ahn, Nicholas Duvernay (The White Lotus) as Jeremy, Jaboukie Young-White (Only Murders in the Building), and Arty Froushan (House of the Dragon).

Your Alignment Has Been Determined
Your Place in the Force

Disciplined, compassionate, and deeply attuned to the living Force, you have walked the path long enough to understand its demands — and accept them. You lead not through authority alone, but through example. You have felt the pull of the dark side and chosen otherwise, every time. That is not certainty. That is courage.
You are earnest, powerful, and brimming with potential — and you know it, which is both your greatest asset and your most dangerous flaw. You act before you think, trust your gut over your training, and sometimes confuse impatience for bravery. The Masters see something in you, though. The question isn’t whether you have what it takes — it’s whether you’ll be patient enough to find out.
You are not simply dangerous — you are certain, and that is worse. You have decided what the galaxy needs, and you have decided you are the one to deliver it. Your power is genuine and formidable, earned through sacrifice that would have broken lesser beings. But examine your victories carefully. Every Sith believed their cause was righteous. The dark side’s cruelest trick is that it agrees with you.
You were forged in fire and reshaped by those who found you at your lowest. You serve, because service gave you structure when you had none. Your allegiance is not to an ideology — it is to survival and to the master who gave you purpose. But there is something buried beneath the conditioning. The Jedi you hunt? You recognize them. Because you remember what it felt like before the choice was taken from you.
You have looked at the Jedi Code and the Sith Code and found both of them incomplete. You walk the line not out of indecision but out of conviction — you genuinely believe both extremes miss something essential. The Jedi don’t fully trust you. The Sith think you’re wasting your potential. They’re both partially right. But so are you.
↻ RETAKE THE QUIZ
Is ‘The Love Hypothesis’ Inspired by Star Wars?
As strange as it sounds, yes, it is. One of the more entertaining details behind The Love Hypothesis is that the original story began as Star Wars fan fiction, inspired by the relationship between Kylo Ren and Rey. Hazelwood later reworked the story into its own world, but that connection remains a big part of the book’s history.
The link gets even funnier when you remember that Bateman is married to Daisy Ridley, who, of course, played Rey in the sequel trilogy. Bateman now plays Adam Carlsen, the character who was partly inspired by Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren, while Reinhart takes on Olive, whose earliest version was influenced by Rey. The Love Hypothesis also comes at a time when the future of the two beloved Sequel Trilogy characters has been in flux. It was previously announced that Daisy Ridley would reprise her role as Rey in a new spin-off film, but after the firing of writer Damon Lindelof, updates have been stagnant for years. As for Adam Driver’s fan-favorite villain, outrage formed within the Star Wars community when news leaked that Driver and director Steven Soderbergh were developing another spin-off titled The Hunt for Ben Solo, only for that to be one of the many prospective Star Wars projects to be scrapped by Lucasfilm.
The Love Hypothesis is directed by Claire Scanlon from a script by Sarah Rothschild and is produced by Elizabeth Cantillon. The Love Hypothesis begins streaming globally on Prime Video on September 23.
