Strict bail conditions have been imposed on a man accused of a number of offences in Letterkenny after Gardaí opposed his release from custody.

Mohammed Gaouaoui, a 40-year-old with an address at Ashfield, Carnamuggagh Upper, Letterkenny, was brought before Judge Emile Daly at Letterkenny District Court by prison officers having been remanded in custody in recent days.

Gaouaoui was charged with offences from May and June of this year.

An interpreter was present in court to aid Gaouaoui through the proceedings.

He was charged with a theft, contrary to Common Law, from Mace, Kilmacrennan, on May 19, 2026.

The accused has also been charged with the theft of a purse containing £42 sterling on the same date at Aldi car park, Gortlee, Letterkenny.

Gaouaoui was charged with being in possession of €30 worth of cannabis at his home at Ashfield, Carnamuggagh, Letterkenny, on May 27, 2026.

He was also charged with an attempt to commit theft, contrary to Common Law, from Donegal Motor Homes, Loughagin, Ramelton Road, Letterkenny, on June 25, 2026.

The accused was aided by an interpreter in court.

Garda Bernard Greene told the court that there was an objection to bail. He outlined that Gardai were concerned that Gaouaoui would commit further serious offences.

Garda Greene said that a purse containing £42 in sterling and an assortment of cards belonging to an older female was removed from a car on May 19, 2025 at Aldi car park.

Solicitor for Gaouaoui, Mr Frank Dorrian, told the court that bail could be granted “with tight constraints”.

Judge Daly said that the accused enjoys the presumption of innocence.

Ordinarily, Judge Daly said the court would consider keeping the accused in custody, but she added that if very strict conditions were applied the State would consent to bail.

Bail was granted on condition that Gaouaoui stay away from Letterkenny Town Park, stay away from Donegal Motor Homes, commit no further offence, provide a telephone number to Gardai and sign on once a week at Letterkenny Garda Station.

The case was adjourned to September and the court asked for a probation report to be prepared for Gaouaoui.
