A major sea search is continuing off the north Mayo coast for a man believed to have fallen down a sheer 126 foot cliff while fishing on Sunday.

The search for the missing man, a foreign national, is concentrated on an area off Downpatrick Head, close to the Dun Briste sea stack.

The dramatic rock face is a popular if dangerous angling spot for shore anglers who congregate there regularly.

Concillor Michael Loftus of the Grainne Uaile Sub Acqua Club and Mayo Search and Rescue Unit said this evening that the search, which started on Sunday, is continuing.

Ballyglass RNLI Lifeboat is involved in the search and rescue effort which is continuing in mixed weather conditions.
