With another Electric Ireland Minor Championship season now complete, Cork and Limerick have added their names to the roll of honour as the 2026 All-Ireland football and hurling champions.
Every year, hundreds of young players dream that minor success will be the first step towards senior inter-county stardom. For many, it is. But for others, those days in county colours become the starting point for extraordinary careers elsewhere.
From Oscar nominees and comedians to politicians and poets, the list of famous faces who once lined out in the minor championship is surprisingly long.

1. Paul Mescal (Kildare)

Let’s get the obvious one out of the way first. Mescal is the most recent addition to this list. The Normal People star captained the Kildare minors in 2014 and was regarded as one of the brightest GAA prospects in the county at the time.
2. Chris O’Dowd (Roscommon)
The Bridesmaids and The IT Crowd star was goalkeeper on the Roscommon minor team in the late 1990s and was viewed as the heir apparent to his childhood hero, Shane Curran.
3. Dara Ó Briain (Wicklow)
Probably the only BBC presenter to have hurled at inter-county minor level, Ó Briain managed half a match for the Wicklow hurlers in his youth before a dodgy knee and a career in comedy took over.
4. Danny O’Reilly (Dublin)
The Coronas frontman played for Dublin in the 2003 minor football championship.

5. Niall Breslin (Westmeath)
Long before becoming the lead singer of The Blizzards, Bressie played minor football for Westmeath before switching his attention to rugby and eventually music.
6. Patrick Kielty (Down)
The Late Late Show host has an All-Ireland medal to his name.
Kielty was substitute goalkeeper when Down won the 1987 All-Ireland Minor Football Championship.
7. Brendan Kennelly (Kerry)
One of Ireland’s greatest poets was wing-back on the Kerry team that reached the 1954 All-Ireland Minor Football final before losing to Dublin.
According to Terrace Talk, he also made one senior league appearance for Kerry against Waterford in 1957.
8. Aengus Fanning (Kerry)
The charismatic former newspaper editor lined out at midfield for Kerry in the 1960 minor championship after starring with his club Austin Stacks.
9. Liam Lawlor (Dublin)
Before entering politics, the late Liam Lawlor was regarded as one of Dublin’s brightest young hurlers.
He not only played minor for Dublin but also represented Leinster at Railway Cup level.
