Met Eireann has issued a fresh Status Yellow high temperature warning as the sweltering conditions which have gripped the country in recent days are forecast to continue for the week ahead.
A new heat record was set this week after temperatures climbed to 30C over the weekend. It marked for the first time since records began that Ireland has hit 30C in three months in the one year following scorching conditions in May, June and July of this year.
Met Eireann has confirmed that temperatures will widely reach the mid to high 20s by day this week, with warm and possibly tropical nights, with the national forecaster issuing a new heat warning for six counties which will come into effect on Monday.
The Status Yellow High Temperature warning has been issued for counties Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Galway and Mayo, and will run from 1pm on Monday until 7am on Wednesday morning.
Issuing the weather alert, Met Éireann said there would be maximum temperatures in excess of 27C combined with overnight temperature minimums in excess of 15C.
The forecaster warned of associated impacts of the hot conditions such as water safety concerns, uncomfortable sleeping conditions, possible heat stress and a forest fire threat.
An existing status yellow high temperature warning covering Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Galway, Mayo, Kilkenny, Laois and Offaly will come into effect at 1pm on Sunday afternoon and will remain in place until 7am on Monday.
Looking at the forecast for the week ahead, Met Eireann said it will remain largely dry and sunny but there is an increased chance of showers and thunderstorms developing later in the week.
Temperatures of 24C to 29C are forecast for Sunday, with Met Eireann saying it will be warmest in the south and west, while Monday will be another dry, warm and sunny day, with highest temperatures of 24C to 29C in Munster and Connacht and 20C to 24C in Leinster and Ulster.
