Major strides are being made in South Cork tourists hotspots to enhance visitor attractions and facilities.

These include a campervan/motorhome facility, a muga (multi-use games area), a coastal walkway, beach toilets, and free concerts.

This emerged at a meeting of Cork County Council’s Bandon/Kinsale Municipal District committee, when its municipal officer and engineers outlined a number of projects that are in train.

Engineers are assessing land at Garrettstown Pitch and Putt Club, following representations from Independent councillor Alan Coleman. 

It will be assessed by council engineers in the coming weeks to determine suitable locations for designated campervan parking within the site.

It’s hoped the facility will be similar to a very popular and lucrative one that was developed some years ago by the county council in Cobh.

A new toilet block is to be installed at Garrettstown beach, which will be wheelchair-accessible.

Polit initiative

Meanwhile, as part of a pilot initiative, two new temporary toilets have been installed at the Dock Beach in Kinsale. 

These will remain in place until the end of August. However, municipal district officer Brian Dunne warned that in the event of anti-social behaviour or vandalism, they may have to be removed.

Mr Dunne said the council has appointed a contractor to carry out enhanced work on a walking trail by Charles Fort, Kinsale, which is set to start in late August.

The municipal district council is also planning to build a muga in the coastal village of Courtmacsherry. A timeframe for that project has not been revealed yet.

Meanwhile, some free music festivals are planned in Kinsale and Bandon, which are being sponsored by the council.

For Kinsale, upcoming events include the appearance of Ballinspittle Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann on the Short Quay on August 23 and 30 from 3pm to 4.30pm.

In Bandon on July 11, Baile Núis Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann will perform at Ballymodan Place from 11am to 12.30pm.

On August 15, the same group will carry out another performance at the same venue and same times.
