A blaze which was subdued on Slievenamon has reignited, and support from aerial units has been requested by fire services.
Acting Senior Assistant Chief Fire Officer at Tipperary Fire and Rescue Service Carol Kennedy said the fire had been subdued following favourable weather conditions overnight.
However, flames are increasing again in the area this morning.
Ms Kennedy said the fire “took off” on the gorse yesterday before reaching oak forestry.
Favourable weather conditions overnight, including a fog at 4am, meant it had not spread deep in the forestry, she added.
Tipperary Fire and Rescue Service crews from Clonmel, Cahir and Carrick-on-Shannon, Coillte personnel and an Air Corps helicopter, who were involved in the battle to bring the blaze under control yesterday, are expected to take part again today.
Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Ms Kennedy said that crews were moved off the mountain for safety reasons overnight but maintained a presence to protect life and property.
There is no current threat to residents, but there is a lot of smoke in the area, so people living nearby should keep their windows and doors shut, she added.
“We’re not concerned about a threat to residents. But what we would say is there is still quite a lot of smoke in the area, so please keep your windows and doors shut for that reason. And look, if there’s anyone that you know that has respiratory issues, you might just check in on them as well.”
They may never know what caused this fire, Ms Kennedy said, but people should take extra care about what they are using around nature and take any rubbish and BBQ’s away with them.
