Miltone — Paris-based vintage synth repair leaders and Oberheim experts — has announced a recreation of the iconic Oberheim Four Voice System synth called the 4Exp.
Based on the 1975 original as a faithful part-for-part copy and built by hand, it also combines the four individual Synthesizer Expander Modules (SEM) into a single instrument.
4Exp is made to order and individually numbered. The modules are available in beige or black, while the chassis comes in aluminium or tolex.
“We already had in mind the idea that we could remake the whole SEM exactly like it was with those new parts, as everything else is still quite easy to source,” Miltone 4Exp creator Manfred Veber told Resident Advisor. “Then the idea of proposing a complete replica (not just an approximate clone) made much more sense and things came to life.”
The 4Exp Aluminum costs €9,990 (ex VAT) plus shipping, while the Tolex Edition is priced at €11,990 (ex VAT) plus shipping. The synth is expected to ship in late 2026. Find out more and pre-order one here.
Originally set up in 1969, Oberheim marked the beginning of a new chapter in 2022 when it revived its operations after going bankrupt in 1985 and being acquired by a group of lawyers.
Since its comeback, Oberheim has released several new models, including 2024’s 5-voice polyphonic analogue synth, the TEO-5, named after Tom Oberheim.
