That’s one way of stopping it blowing(Image: NCT)

One Munster motorist who turned up to an NCT to take his test had a bit of a surprise waiting for the examiner, under the floor pan as their exhaust was certainly not the real thing.

Where a pipe had obviously been blowing, the tester found a Coke can repurposed as a patch, needless to say, it didn’t pass.

It was a real old-school approach to dealing with a holed exhaust, a throwback to when a baked beans tin would often be used to bodge a banger and get a few more miles out of a rusty backbox.

The NCT people had to applaud the effort, even if it really wasn’t up to code. Confirming to CorkBeo that this example of DIY mechanics was spotted at a centre in Munster, the NCT said: “This vehicle owner, aka MacGyver, thought using Coke cans for an exhaust repair was a genius move. Always rely on a reputable mechanic for your vehicle repairs!”

It’s not even the maddest thing seen at a test centre this month, just last week, we told you about an enterprising driver who had decided he didn’t need to pay attention to his engine warning lights – not when he had some black gaffer tape that could simply delete the warning lights from his sight.

Coke Cans and gaffer tape show a creative approach to car maintenance in Munster – but at least both cars had tax and insurance – not like the Ferrari nabbed on the Straight Road in Cork recently. That 170kmh supercar didn’t even have a current NCT!
