It’s day one of five glorious days at Goodwood and Matt likes the look of Twilight Calls (each-way) in the 16:10.

ITV Racing is back with five days from Glorious Goodwood this week, starting here with a handicap for older horses over 1m2f. George Scott is a terrific trainer and his AL AALI might have every chance here from a fine draw in stall three. As a horse who will be dropped out the back for a late challenge, he will need some luck in running. But he ran all right at Sandown and Newmarket (over 1m4f) before winning at HQ in good style the other day. He’s up to 93 for that win, but he was 104 once so there might be some wiggle room. William Buick rides.
14:25 – Pikachu (each-way)
Now the Group 2 Vintage Stakes for juveniles over 7f. PIKACHU has a decent each-way chance here for Amo, Charlie Johnston and David Egan. He has just over a length to make up on Al Hudaiba from the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket but is now 3lb better off at the weights and he ducked right at the start that day which won’t have helped. The Chesham fifth is a pretty useful horse and he’s too big a price not to chance each-way.
The Group 2 Lennox Stakes over 7f. With Witness Stand and Qirat both likely to go forward this will set up as best as it ever will for LAKE FOREST who should in any case take all the beating for William Haggas and Cieren Fallon. Rated 119 the likely warm favourite is the best of these on paper and was far from disgraced in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot when staying on well over the 6f. His running style always makes things tough, but this is a huge opportunity. On his day he’s as good as any horse out there in Europe over 7f.
The big one of the day in the Group 1 Goodwood Cup over 2m. Very boring from me here, but there is little doubt SCANDINAVIA is the best stayer around and I actually think he will enjoy coming back to 2m from 2m4f even though he got the better of Trawlerman late on in the Ascot Gold Cup over the extended distance. The winner of seven of his 11 races and unbeaten in his last six – including the St Leger – Scandinavia has it all and I expect him to win for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore. I suspect MISS ALPILLES, the outsider of the field, will run much better than her odds suggest for those wanting a speculative each-way hope.
A handicap over 5f. Clearly the draw will be key here and with Run Boy Run there to give him a lead old boy TWILIGHT CALLS is the selection for Saffie Osborne and Richard Spencer. A visor has brought about improvement in the former classy sprinter, and while in three runs he’s up from 80 to 90 in the ratings he’s still chucked in on form shown only last year when he was rated up to 104. A fine winner at Newmarket earlier in the month and he has a strong each-way chance again. Has run well here before so the track is no problem.
