Al Arrivee heads the betting, and she’s a decent mare in her own right. Patrick Mullins takes the ride on her, and she has her chance. At the prices, I prefer MR HOLLYWOOD, who’s ridden by Brian Hayes. He’s got a huge rating on the flat, and was third behind Illinois and French Master in the Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot. He made his comeback over hurdles at Killarney, and improved considerably when reverted to the flat for that Ascot contest, and he’s the one for me in the opener.

IMARAJAN could still be relatively well handicapped. He’s only had five starts over hurdles, finishing second at Kilbeggan on his penultimate start before going on to score at the same track last time off 105. Paddy Cody retains the ride, and he’s only 1lb higher than he was last time. He’s not my strongest selection of the day, but he does make some appeal at the prices.

I’d be hopeful that there’s some juice in a mark of 122 for Venusienne, but she was very disappointing at Kilbeggan on her seasonal reappearance. It’s always worth taking note when James Owen sends one to Ireland, and ZAHRA DODVILLE really catches the eye. She was third behind Highland Crystal at Newbury in November, who’s now rated 128, while Zahra Dodville gets in off 117. Just under 10 lengths separated the pair on that occasion, and she’s only had the one start since. She could be very well handicapped, and she’s definitely of interest.

Second-season Novices have a great record in the Galway Plate, and FUNICULI FUNICULA won the right type of trial for this at the Punchestown Festival. The extra couple of furlongs look right up his street, and he should go very close.

KING ALEXANDER looks overpriced, having run a cracker at Cheltenham behind Meetmebythesea. He had Kiss Will just behind him, who still held a chance when falling two-out in the Irish National. That’s a solid piece of form, and he’s far too big at the current prices. I’ll be with him each-way.

KIRKLAND SIOUX won really well at the Curragh last time, having won at Fairyhouse on her penultimate start. She’s been hit hard by the handicapper and now runs off a mark of 87, 11lb higher than last time. The extended mile should really suit her, and the stiff finish at Galway should bring about even more improvement. Joseph O’Brien remains in red-hot form, and she’ll take some beating.

My Dad saddles GAOTH CHUIL in the lucky last. She won over 1m 7f at Leopardstown two starts ago, before backing that up when stepped up in trip at Killarney last time. Similar to my last selection, this stiff uphill finish should really suit her, and she should be able to carry a penalty in the last!
