Some House of the Dragon fans were left perplexed on Sunday when they found star of the show Tom Glynn-Carney avidly supporting Mayo in the All-Ireland football final.

Mayo ended one of the most infamous curses in world sport in Sunday’s final against Kerry, claiming a superb three-point victory to bring Sam Maguire back to the western county for the first time in 75 years.

The Westerners’ victory captured the imagination of viewers around the world, with the likes of The New York Times and Bild reporting on the historic nature of their All-Ireland drought coming to an end.

Despite the global impact of Mayo’s win, some fans of hit drama House of the Dragon were surprised to see star of the show Tom Glynn-Carney flying the green and red flag over the weekend – we reached out to the man himself to find out the nature of his connection to the county.

Tom Glynn-Carney’s Mayo roots

Manxhester-biorn actor Tom Glynn-Carney burst onto the scene as one of the stars of Christopher Nolan’s war epic Dunkirk, playing a young sailor helping to rescue a lost soldier (his scenes played alongside Irish stars Cillian Murphy and Barry Keoghan).

He has since gained wider recognition as one of the leading stars of ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-off House of the Dragon, playing Aegon II Targaryen.

On Sunday afternoon, fans of House of the Dragon were surprised to see Glynn-Carney posting messages of support for Mayo on his Instagram story.

Glynn-Carney shared a reel of the full-time whistle blowing at Croke Park, as well as the now-viral clip of Mayo fan Shane Fitzgerald reduced to floods of tears in the stands.

We’ve now unearthed Glynn-Carney’s Mayo roots.

Balls.ie reached out to the actor, and can confirm that he was born to “Mayo stock,” with the Glynn’s hailing from Ballyhaunis and the Carney’s from Westport.

“I grew up watching the GAA and have worn the green and red ever since,” Glynn-Carney told us.

So, to boot with soccer legend Gary Neville, Mayo can count actor Tom Glynn-Carney among their esteemed fanbase – which seems to be ever-growing after their miraculous win on Sunday.
