A beloved Church of Ireland Minister has died – just nine months after his wife was killed in a road traffic collision in Donegal.
Rev Canon Stanley Johnson, who lived in Gweedore, passed away on Wednesday in a Dublin hospital following a short illness.
His wife, Rev Shiela Johnson, nee Rowe, died in a single-vehicle collision at Kilraine, Glenties on October 29, 2025.
The couple, who were married for almost 60 years, lived at Rainbow’s End, Carrickmacafferty, Derrybeg having moved to Donegal in 2001.
Canon Stanley Johnson was installed as the Rector of Clondehorkey and Mevagh and he retired in 2009 while his wife served as Priest-in-Charge of the Parish of Clondevaddock, also requiring in 2009.
Previously, they served together in the Diocese of Kilmore, Elphin and Ardagh between 1989 and 2001.
Canon Johnson is survived by son Timothy, daughters Melanie and Wendy, son-in-law Derrick, daughter-in-law Fiona, grandchildren Cian, Aoife and her husband Cailem, Roisin, Diarmuid and his wife Eva, Caoimhe, Ruth, Katy and Thomas and great-grandchildren, extended family and friends.
There will be no wake and the public are advised that the house will be private.

Viewing will take place at the Eternal Light Chapel of Rest, Mountain Top, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal (F92 XE35) on Friday, July 31, from 4-6pm.
Canon Johnson’s funeral service will take place at St. John’s Church, Ballymore, Dunfanaghy on Saturday, August 1, at 11am and cremation will take place in Lakelands Crematorium in Cavan later that day.
A funeral notice says: :Family flowers only please, donations in lieu if desired to the ME Association c/o any family member or James Harkin, Funeral Director.”
The Diocese of Derry and Raphoe has said there is “great sadness among members of the Diocesan family” following news of Canon Johnson’s death.
