ITV Racing is back Friday on Day 4 of Glorious Goodwood, starting here with a handicap over an extended 2m4f. Old boy CHARGING THUNDER has plenty of back form that gives him an each-way chance here off a mark of 86. At the age of eight, he’s not going to be getting any better, but a second at Beverley off a mark 4lb higher earlier in the year shows he still has some puff and he was a winner over hurdles 12 days ago. James Owen trains with jockey David Probert on top.
Now a Group 3 for 3yo over 1m. Very hard to get away from TALK OF NEW YORK, who has a much higher rating than most of these with a mark of 116 and who has the best form in the race. The St James’s Palace Stakes third can still show better form in the future as he pulled hard early at Ascot and he’s a very promising horse in the making. I’m pleased Saber Strike is up in trip but surprised by the blinkers. William Buick rides for Charlie Appleby.
Here’s a big handicap over 1m. EBTS GUARD should play a part here at each-way odds. The Muir/Grassick hope has been in fine form this season, with a third last time at Sandown behind Indalo another fine performance. He was also fourth in the Hunt Cup. There’s no wiggle room off a mark of 104, but he’s 3lb better off with Indalo and my hope has been unlucky not to win here before. Hard to kick out the frame under Lewis Edmunds.
The big class sprint of the week in the Group 2 King George Stakes over 5f. TIME FOR SANDALS has totally gone at the game this season, but she gets Kieran Shoemark back on board, who went well with her back at Haydock last season, so maybe he will make a difference. The filly has no chance on any recent form, but last year she was a decent third in this behind JM Jungle, and she was unlucky in running that day.
We end with a conditions race for older horses over 1m1f. GALEN chased home Haatem in the 2025 Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot and is 5lb better off at the weights here. He also has the better recent form, finishing fourth behind Map of Stars in the same race this term. Basically, he has every chance of being in the mix under Dylan Browne McMonagle for Joseph O’Brien. Draw 9 could have been a bit better but is no excuse.
