Kelsey Schulte was visiting Katmai National Park in Alaska when she started recording what seemed like a peaceful moment: a mama grizzly encouraging her two cubs to climb a tree. She had no idea the scene was about to go from calm to chaos in a matter of seconds.
We’ve all heard the phrase, “Don’t mess with Mama Bear,” but seeing it play out in real life is something else entirely. The moment the mother bear spots a massive male grizzly heading their way, she explodes into action. Her incredible burst of speed leaves everyone watching absolutely speechless, and it’s a powerful reminder of just how fiercely protective mother bears can be.
Kelsey shared in the caption, “Equal parts awe and adrenaline watching this unfold at Katmai National Park in Alaska last weekend. A humbling reminder that we’re guests in their home.”

How Fast Can Grizzly Bears Run?
Despite their enormous size, grizzly bears are astonishingly fast, as Kelsey’s video makes abundantly clear. According to the National Park Service, an adult grizzly bear can reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour over short distances; fast enough to outrun even the fastest human. In fact, the agency notes that a bear can cover a 300-yard distance in less than 20 seconds, which is both incredible and a little terrifying.

Mother bears are especially protective of their cubs and may charge if they perceive a threat, which is why wildlife experts recommend giving them plenty of space, never getting between a mother and her young, and always observing bears from a safe distance.
After watching this, we’d say the farther away, the better.
