A leading member of the Orange Order is to submit plans to build more than 200 houses in Donegal Town.
Donegal-native David Mahon is a leading property developer and businessman who is now based in Fermanagh. He is also the longstanding Orange Order County Grand Master for Donegal.
David Mahon Properties Ltd is to seek planning permission from Donegal County Council for the 228-unit estate in the Glebe and Raforker townlands. Designed by William Donoghue Associates, the proposed development will comprise a varied mix of houses and apartments, together with a ‘neighbourhood retail space’, crèche and extensive landscaped public open space.

Of the 228 units, 71 will be made up of houses and 157 apartments. There are also plans for four retail units.
“We are delighted to bring forward this LRD Planning Application at Glebe, Donegal Town,” a spokesperson for the developer said.
“Our aim is to create a sustainable, attractive and well-connected residential development that will deliver much-needed new homes while making a positive and lasting contribution to the town.”
A Large-scale Residential Development (LRD) planning application is a specific process for major housing projects, handled directly by local planning authorities rather than through the old Strategic Housing Development (SHD) system.

According to the Draft Donegal Town Area Plan, the lands are zoned ‘Local Environment’ and identified as ‘visually vulnerable.’
A formal planning application is expected to be lodged with the council in the coming days.
Mr Mahon’s considerable portfolio includes part of Devenish Island in Fermanagh, which he bought earlier this year, Crumlin Road Courthouse in Belfast, and a number of shopping centres in Ireland and the UK.
