A total of 62 young anglers gathered at Lough Lene for the 42nd International Youth Fly Fishing Championship, which took place over three days during the week of 27 July.
Teams from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales competed in the annual event, Monday and Tuesday serving as practice days ahead of the championship on Wednesday.
On the final day, 31 boats took to the water between 10am and 5pm as competitors fished for the international title.
Julie Gerry, national youth officer with the Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association (ITFFA) and manager of the Irish team, congratulated the participants following the competition.
“I want to thank all the anglers who took part today. It was a good match and, although the weather wasn’t brilliant, you all succeeded,” she said.
Following the day’s fishing, the results were announced. England finished in fourth place with 18 fish, Wales placed third with 30 fish, and Scotland secured second place with 44 fish.
The Irish Youth team retained the championship title for a sixth consecutive year, finishing in first place with a total of 54 fish.
Following the competition, participants travelled to the Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone, where the trophy presentation took place later on Wednesday evening.
