There are calls for more investment in water storage.

There are calls for greater investment in water storage as Ireland experiences more frequent swings between flooding and dry conditions.

Carlow Weather’s Alan O’Reilly says climate change is contributing to more extreme weather patterns, with farmers and communities increasingly feeling the effects.

He says recent flooding and wildfires should serve as a warning that more preparation is needed to manage changing conditions.

Mr O’Reilly told the Opinion Line with PJ Coogan on Cork’s 96FM that Ireland needs to look at solutions including more reservoirs and nature-based water storage.

“We need to be looking at building more reservoirs and more nature-based kind of storage of water, because we go from flooding in the autumn and the winter, then to droughts in the summer.”

He says better water management will become increasingly important as Ireland adapts to a changing climate.
