On August 5, HBO Max announced that an untitled Gilmore Girls documentary was officially in production, with series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, her husband, executive producer Daniel Palladino, and other cast and crew on board. The movie will “reveal how the show eclipsed expectations to become a cross-generational phenomenon” with “never-before-seen outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage and script pages,” according to Variety.
Given that Lauren, who played Lorelai Gilmore, is taking part in the documentary, she shared her thoughts about it in an Instagram post. “Oh hey, hi… we’re making a documentary,” she wrote in the caption.

“SCREAMING CRYING THROWING UP LOSING MY MIND,” one person shouted in the comments. “Where you lead, we will follow (to HBO Max for this documentary!!!),” another cheered. “Oy with the poodles already! I CANNOT WAIT!! 👏👏👏☕️☕️☕️,” a different follower exclaimed.
The new Gilmore Girls documentary isn’t the only film about the show in production. In 2025, another documentary film, called Drink Coffee, Talk Fast, was announced, with cast members Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore), Chad Michael Murray (Tristan Dugray), Jared Padalecki (Dean Forrester), Keiko Agena (Lane Kim), and more discussing their experiences on the show. While not much else outside of an official trailer has been released, Lauren commented about why she didn’t participate in the film.
“I don’t do anything the creator of my show isn’t a part of, so, so far, no,” she said to Entertainment Tonight at the 2025 Emmy Awards.
Looks like we’ll need to rewatch every episode of Gilmore Girls to get ready for this.
