MONEA man Seán Hoy has officially taken up one of Ireland’s most senior diplomatic postings after beginning his term as Ambassador to South Korea.
Seán Hoy this week presented his credentials to South Korean President Lee Jae-myung in Seoul, formally commencing his role as Ireland’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea.
The appointment marks another milestone in Mr Hoy’s career who has represented Ireland across Africa and South America during more than three decades in public service.
Major role
Ambassador Hoy joined Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs in 1990 and has previously served as Ambassador to Brazil and Nigeria.
He has also held diplomatic responsibility for a number of other countries, including Ghana, Guyana and Suriname.
Speaking after presenting his credentials, Ambassador Hoy said he was looking forward to strengthening the relationship between Ireland and South Korea.
“I look forward to working closely together to further solidify the friendship between our two countries,” he said.
The Monea man’s latest posting comes after a career that has taken him across the globe, but his achievements have continued to be followed with pride in his native Fermanagh.
South Korea is one of Asia’s leading economies and an increasingly important partner for Ireland in areas including trade, investment, education and culture.
As ambassador, Mr Hoy will lead Ireland’s diplomatic mission in Seoul and work to deepen ties between the two nations.
