An investigation is under way after a prisoner died following an assault at Wheatfield Prison in Dublin last night.
It is understood the man was 39 and from Dublin. He was in his cell, which he was sharing with another prisoner, when he died last night.
The man was serving a sentence of two years and nine months for possession of drugs for sale or supply.
The Irish Prison Service said all deaths in custody are investigated by the IPS, the Inspector of Prisons and gardaí.
In a statement, it said: “The Irish Prison Service wish to express our condolences to the deceased’s family and friends.
“Next of kin have been informed.”
