Mona McSharry continued on the medal trail at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris as she claimed the bronze medal in the women’s 200m breaststroke final.
Evgeniia Chikunova took gold in 2:19.32 with Britain’s Angharad Evans in second on 2:21.21 while McSharry’s 2:22.43 was enough to fend off Tes Schouten on the Netherlands who finished in 2:22.67.
Ellie McCartney finished eighth in a stacked final with a time of 2:26.93.
“It was a bit of a relief, for sure,” McSharry told RTÉ Sport after her win. “I’m happy with it. As Ellen [Walshe] would say, I was fighting demons during that one. Not the time I wanted, but I’m happy.
“I was hanging on for dear life at the end but I was catching someone so that’s good.”
