Limerick Star Makes Major College Switch After Fitzgibbon Final Heroics

Shane O’Brien is set to line out for the University of Limerick in next season’s Fitzgibbon Cup after making the switch from Fitzgibbon rivals Mary Immaculate College.

The Kilmallock forward spent four years studying for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography and Religion at Mary I between 2022 and 2026. He will now embark on a master’s degree in Business Management at UL, making him eligible to represent the reigning Fitzgibbon Cup champions.

It is a particularly intriguing switch considering O’Brien’s history against his new college.

He played an important role when Mary I denied UL three consecutive Fitzgibbon Cup titles in the 2024 final. Jamie Wall’s underdogs secured a 2-14 to 1-15 victory in Abbeydorney, with O’Brien starting in the forwards.

The colleges renewed their rivalry in the 2026 decider at Croke Park, but this time UL proved far too strong. O’Brien produced a remarkable individual display for Mary I, scoring 1-12 of their 3-21 total, but even that was not enough to prevent a 4-31 to 3-21 defeat.

That victory delivered UL’s tenth Fitzgibbon Cup and their fourth in five seasons. O’Brien will now join the side he caused so many problems for in February as they attempt to retain the trophy again in 2027.

The transfer further strengthens what is traditionally one of the most talent-packed panels in third-level hurling. UL’s 2026 final victory was powered by players such as Cathal O’Neill, Adam English, Darragh McCarthy and Jack Leahy, while O’Brien’s arrival will give them another proven scoring threat.

His form throughout the most recent competition was not limited to the final. O’Brien finished the campaign as the leading scorer with 2-42, underlining just how significant an addition he could be for UL.

The 22-year-old has also enjoyed a trophy-laden intercounty campaign with Limerick. John Kiely’s side collected the Munster Senior Hurling League and National League before adding the Munster and All-Ireland titles.

O’Brien has carried that momentum into the Whitebox Limerick Senior Hurling Championship, helping Kilmallock begin their campaign with two victories from two.

After beating UL in one Fitzgibbon final and scoring 1-12 against them in another, O’Brien will now attempt to help the competition’s dominant force add yet more silverware.
