This weekend marks nine years since the death of Joe Deacy, who died after a violent assault in Mayo in August 2017.
In the early morning of 12 August that year, the 21-year-old was found unconscious outside a house he had been staying in at Gortnasillagh outside Swinford.
Mr Deacy – who was from London but of Mayo descent – had sustained serious head injuries through blunt force trauma, and he died the following evening in Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital.
Gardaí initially treated the incident as an accident, but his death was later upgraded to a murder investigation.
Political Correspondent Barry Lenihan – who has been covering the story for several years – recently spoke to Mr Deacy’s father Adrian, and told Behind the Story the question of who killed him remains a mystery.
Gardaí have stated they believe the key to solving the case lies within the local community.
