Sir, – What’s happening in Ukraine at present is reprehensible. It is obvious from the reports of blocks of flats, bookstores, shopping centres and railway stations being targeted that Russia is blatantly attacking civilians.
These deaths and injuries are manifestly not collateral damage. Volodymyr Zelenskiy is correct too when he says that this is an attack on Europe as a whole.
If his country falls it will only be a short step for Russian president Vladimir Putin to go after other countries that in his delusion he imagines to be part of the Russian empire. Finland and Poland would qualify under that criterion.
And it is only Europe, the UK and Canada that can mount a defence now. The US is a dead letter for the foreseeable future in this regard. Ireland should be at the forefront of the drive to save Ukraine, particularly as we have the presidency of the Council of the EU – and even after we relinquish it. – Yours, etc,
