Met Eireann has extended the Status Yellow rainfall warning which is currently in place to include three further counties as torrential downpours are set to lash the country overnight.
On Wednesday, the national forecaster issued a rainfall warning for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow and Waterford from Thursday afternoon into Friday morning.
In an update issued on Thursday, Met Eireann announced that Dublin and Kildare have been added to the weather warning, which has also been extended until 6am on Friday instead of 3am.
The potential impacts associated with the weather warning, according to Met Eireann, are the risk of localised flooding and difficult travelling conditions, while outdoor events may also be affected.
According to Met Eireann’s latest forecast, outbreaks of rain will continue across much of the south, east, and midlands overnight.

The national forecaster warned that the rain will turn heavy at times with thunder possible, before clearing eastwards towards morning.
It is expected to be drier elsewhere, however, with just a few showers and some clear spells developing too, while ome mist and fog patches will form too. Lowest temperatures of 12C to 16C are forecast, with light northwesterly or variable breezes.
Any lingering rain in the east will clear by morning, together with areas of mist and fog, to leave a brighter day for most with sunny spells and scattered showers.
However, some of the showers will be heavy and possibly thundery, with highest temperatures of 18C to 23C, with light to moderate northwest breezes.
It will be dry for most at first on Friday night. However, outbreaks of rain in the southwest will gradually extend over much of the country through the night, though northern areas may remain dry overall.
Those attending Electric Picnic this weekend may avoid the worst of the weather but should still pack in anticipation of showers over the coming days.
